BRITISH KNITWEAR – SHOP SHELFIE WEEK 3

What’s new and in stock?

British knitwear, and lots of it! This week marked the autumn equinox and change in season. I can definitely feel the shift over the past couple of days, there’s a slight nip in the air as the temperature drops and I’m finding I need an extra layer of warmth to feel comfortable outside.

To tie in with equinox, we sent our monthly letter Under The Canvas out to our subscribers, this always includes a little note from me together with book and podcast recs and anything else that’s caught my eye. If this sounds like your thing, feel free to sign up here and join along. I always love it when customers reply to emails, nice to feel a sense of community and that’s it’s a two-way thing 🙂

We had an arrival of Moon Power – a book around cyclical living and understanding the lunar cycle. It’s such a beautiful book, and is less about astrology but more about learning to trust your intuition. It’s up on the shop and if you buy a book this week, we will include a free gold foil letterpress moon card in your order. Yay!

FEATURED OBJECTS – BRITISH KNITWEAR, SOCKS

The sock. The Greeks were the first to wear socks, made from animal hair. The Romans were sewing pieces of fabric together to create fitted socks they called ‘undones’. These are the first socks to resemble the garments we wear today.

By the end of the 12th century, much of Europe’s working classes were knitting their own homespun socks, while the hosiery of noblemen was generally made from cloth of higher quality.

After the industrial revolution, the largely woollen socks became easier and cheaper to produce and their appeal spread across Europe. At the start of the 19th century, circular knitting frames were introduced which further mechanised sock production.
